    Songbirds of the South

So – mums, dads and young folk, in a face-off among those popular “Sirens of the South” for teeny-boppers,

    1) who wins out ?:-

    a) Britney Spears (McComb, Mississippi/Kentwood, Louisiana)
    b) Hilary Duff (Houston, Texas)
    c) Selina Gomez (Grand Prairie, Texas)
    d) Miley Cyrus (Nashville, Tennessee)
    e) Lynyrd Skynyrd (Jacksonville, Florida)

    2) Can you spot the odd-one out and why ?

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a southern rock band from the 70's and an all male band at that.. Nothing teenie bopper about their music.. Free Bird was the anthem of my youth, Simple Man is the anthem of many a man, especially in the biker world..

I like LS and have a DVD with Freebird on a live studio recording at BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test show from either 1975 or 76. Edgar Winter is on the DVD too doing “Frankenstein” and also Little Feat, among others.

I have a live concert version of LS doing Freebird on DVD too. I think LS is still going today in spite of the '70's air tragedy.

So back to my original post, who's best (a - e) and who's the odd one out ?

I always get CCR's "Long As I Can See the Light" running in my head for the first 25 miles or so away from home. After that it's Molly Hatchet: "Revenge of the Peacemakers." There's a special lamp she turns on in the window, I can see it almost all the way down the valley at night on my way in.

Peacekeeper spotted a couple things: Skynnyrd is not teenie, and all male. I'm gonna say Selina, because she's -- I think -- the only Hispanic singer on the list and was biggest in that genre.

I vote for Miley, just because she's the only one hasn't changed her speaking accent to "fit in" with the "in crowd", whoever that is. She still sounds like me, bless her heart. Speaking of me, I was recently in a business establishment near here with several other people, and I discovered that I was the only one who sounded native. Hmmmm...........

Though I like Selina, I think the pedigree and track record of Miley are far beyond the usual Disney tweeters.

Hilary Duff (a Texas gal !), Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato, Ashley Tisdale, Selena Gomez etc are all talented and capable entertainment actors and singers – and of course the Jonas Bros have been very popular in their field too.

However, Miley has the musical credentials and background, she is a really good singer and entertainer and I think she will be a popular singer and actress for many years to come. Does she compose any of her own material ?

Go Miley ! Yup I’ll go with the Volunteer State for this one !!

Hey guys – I only added Lynyrd Skynyrd for a joke – honest guvn’r ! I still love the guitar work in the upbeat finale to Freebird and Ronnie Van Zandt will never be forgotten for his singing and stage persona !

BTW do people still shout Freebird during other bands’ concerts ? LOL !!
