Oh, the hideous things the idle mind can create in order to feel superior to someone else.

I would suggest doing exactly what you did. Ignore it and have them come to you if they are going to ask things like that. If it continues go with someone respected from the church as a neutral party and ask them to please refrain from spreading lies.

Oh, and thank your friend for coming to you directly.

I'm not surprised to hear that the idle minds at the church are wagging their tongues so loosely. I'm only disheartened again. I have always known in past, just as in present that those do the prattle and mindless gossip in the church are there not for Christ, or our brothers & sister in faith, nor for fellow believers (or non believers) or for the betterment of any thing except their own status in whatever social club is the flavor of the week.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

    Very well put. Thank you.

Boy, that's too bad. Well, it's just a chance to open some minds. For my part, I've gotten messages from several people at my home church (in Los Angeles) demanding that come kilted when we're back this summer.

You could start a counter-rumour that there's a gang of angry Scotsmen out looking for the person that made the cross-dressing comment. But really, does anyone this stupid rate a lot of thought?

    It happened to me too.

Just give them time and wear your kilt with pride!

They´ll get used to it, perhaps even understand.

Ageism, racism, and all the other "..isms" have now been joined by "kiltism". I guess this is how some folks make themselves feel better or superior to others - put people down so they can feel "up".

I think you did well considering it likely blind-sided you. Now that you've had some time to digest the situation and are aware of the "issue" you do have some burden to be proactive in it's resolution. I would actually ask your friend (if he chooses not to identify to you the person spreading the gossip) go to that person and invite them to meet you for coffee at X-time and X-place so you can both discuss the issue. Even in conflict we can and should glorify Gods love between each other and seek peace. I'd also encourage you to spend a bit of time in prayer for wisdom to resolve the conflict for Gods Glory and not for the "glory" or "submission" of either of you.

"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over." -- Matthew 18:15

    Seven steps to resolving conflict:
    1. IF THERE IS CONFLICT
    2. YOU
    3. GO
    4. TO THE PERSON
    5. IN PRIVATE
    6. AND DISCUSS THE PROBLEM
    7. FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECONCILIATION

It is always interesting to start a rumor and wait to see what it sounds like when it gets back to you.
The worst thing you could do now is to stop wearing your kilt. Then, tongues will really wag.
Wear your kilt with pride and wear it often. You started wearing the kilt for a reason, keep that in mind when you next put the kilt on. Step outside and walk tall and don't let them church goin Christian type folks get you down.
