    Chief's Choice

Wondering which version of Clanranald tartan might be preferred by the Ranald the Captain, I've come across a couple of pics of him wearing, well, not MacDonald of Clanranald. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he appears to be wearing MacDonald of Sleat kilt with a rather large set of MacDonald clan over his shoulder.

Why might the chief of Clanranald be wearing Sleat?

Interesting, that is not a Mackay tartan that I'm familiar with : http://www.clanmackayusa.org/tartans.html

& here I thought I knew all of them (including the very little known Dutch Gold Mackay)

Here is also an unofficial Mackay Dress tartan:

Is this one of the photos?

As an aside, the Chief of Keppoch has chosen 'Macdonell of Keppoch Ancient (#511)' as the representative tartan for the Macdonell's of Keppoch branch (or 'MacDonald' as he now spells the name...I just can't quite get use to it ).

Yeah, I can't find it listed anywhere else as MacKay either.

That's right. I'd intended to link to the images, but got distracted while posting. Thank-you for filling in for me. I can't find that tartan for sale anywhere either. Perhaps it is a custom weave or even an heirloom. The shoulder throw (fly?) looks quite old.
