Very nice! Gunn's got a lot of nice variations.
I must admit that I am torn between the modern and ancient. I wish I could order one of each ...

I don't consider it "bright", in fact it's the muted tones that I prefer. It may be the camera flash that's highlighting the colours.

If you PM me your address I'll send you a swatch, (large enough to really get a feel for the tartan) I have lots of material left over. It's 13 oz. Loccarron (sp?).

Plus I can't say enough about Barb's magic fingers, of course I'm preaching to the choir here.

Well then get both. A nice wool ancient one and a PV kilt in the modern colors...

A nice wool it will be, but I can't really see myself wearing a PV kilt. It's just an issue I have about kilts; they have to be wool.

Yes we should keep in mind that colours change from mill to mill as you say.

I don't know what mill those Misty Isle Pipe Band kilts were from, or where the band had their kilts made. But anyhow I wore that Flower of Scotland kilt for two years and there were times where somebody was weraing Gunn and they were the same colours exactly.

Even the same tartan in the same colours from the same mill might vary, either from batch to batch or between 13oz and 16oz etc.

For example Drummond of Perth (muted colours) from Edgar varies in many small ways between their 13oz and their 16oz.

Something interesting to note. This past year was the 40th anniversary of the Clan Gunn Society of North America. There was a photo shoot of all the CGSNA Past Presidents and everyone was wearing the Gunn tartan in the ancient colors except for two and they were wearing the weathered colors.

Personally I am a fan of the ancient colors. I just purchased fabric from House of Edgar in the Gunn Ancient colors. Very nice fabric. I couldn't be more happy. I'm having a kilt made out of it for my wedding coming up. I purchased the fabric from Scotweb at a very good price. They have really competitive prices.

A member and friend of mine is making the kilt for me, Mac Ghille Sheathanaich. He does some very nice work indeed.

    Slainte!

    Smile Gunn-weathered

I just ordered a Gunn weathered from USAkilts.com. I prefer the weathered over the ancient, but that's just me. I suggest a visit to USAkilts.com, they have a great selection in both 13 and 16 oz.

I agree with you on the ALL WOOL kilt. Here in northern Europe we need that warmth.

PV is not worth thinking about.

I've been around the net at USAKilts, and other places to compare different mills. So far I have come up with Lochcarron Strome. Ancient looks a tad better than modern, so leaning on that one just for now.
Will have to do a bit more research before I order, just be totally sure. It's after all a few hundred pounds for a kilt.
