Speaking of male/female on the closure, what I really like best of all is where the flap has a metal-reinforced female side (basically a squared-shape grommet) and the body of the sporran has a male side that's rectangular. The flap closes over the male side and you twist it 90 degrees to lock it in place. That's a good positive connection.
