George Cleal was born in Dayton, Ohio but moved to Toronto, where he entered UTS in 1910. He volunteered in the second month of the war, joining the 48th Highlanders, where he was a popular member of A Company. He was killed at Langemarck, near Ypres, in Belgium, during the first German chlorine gas attack of the war. While French soldiers fled, Cleal and 2000 other Canadians - perhaps including his fellow UTS student Laurence Shields - held their position. His body was never recovered, and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

Men from the 15th Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada, newly arrived on the siding of Exhibition Station (not the current one; the siding pictured was further west). Having reached Halifax on 7 May 1919, the battalion history tells us that the men entrained for Toronto and after "a gay journey and an unforgettable one," the unit's 782 officers and enlisted men "rolled up to the Exhibition sidings and were clambering out in a hysteria of greetings as half the city crowded the grounds to meet them."
