This Friday, 4/16th I'll be wearing my USAK semi-trad in Stewart Black tartan in rememberance of the Battle of Culloden.

I'm ordering a new Macdonnell of Keppoch (Ancient) Box Pleat, so I'll fly my Cross of St. Andrews & have a wee dram or two in memory of the fallen.

I'll be at a military history conference, so I suppose I could wear a kilt that day.
Alas, my MacDonald kilt no longer fits, and of my kilts that fit all are for those clans who supported the Government.

Don't forget that many more Scots fought on the side of the Government than fought for BPC at Culloden. Even in the Highlands BPC was not universally popular. I shall remember the brave men, of both sides, who fought in that battle.

Jock,
You seem to have the knack of always saying just the right thing!

The history is very complicated. The issues were the right of succession following the deposition of James II of England, BPCs grandfather and the old chestnut that has blighted much of NW Europe since the 16th Century; the Roman Catholic v Protestant issue. So it was not as straight forward as Scotland v England and ironically the West Coast of Scotland, BPC's powerbase, was not brought under the control of the king based in Edinburgh until the 1540's.

Just a slight correction; Many Episcopalians in Scotland were supporters of the Jacobite cause, so to say it was a "Protestant v. RC" issue isn't exactly the case.
And I agree with Jock; there were brave men on both sides that deserve our respect. Honour their memory.

The Roman Catholic v Protestant was an underlying issue as potestand William of Organe had deposed Roman catholic James II. No doubt the positioning of clans was further complicated by some seizing the opportunity to use the conflict to settle scores with others.

But it was one of the issues, and certainly one which people of the time would have considered when choosing sides; the relative weight of the issue in the decision would have (naturally) varied from person to person. There were no doubt those for whom it was the pre-eminent issue, and others for whom the other issues mentioned would have played a larger role.
