And as the head bottlewasher around her you have my full permission to wear the Tartan.

Thank you, Your Wizardship. I have, of course, come to think of this forum as my clan and would love to have a kilt in the XMTS tartan someday.

Since Jock's generous gift of his retired Balmoral I have pondered the question of how to decorate it and one of the possible choices I listed in the thread about his new bonnet was the XMTS cap badge. I was pleased to see that you had ordered a new stock.

When I questioned my right to a clan I was merely going the conventional route concerning whether you are connected to a certain "family" clan whether or not you bear the correct surname.

Obviously, I have rights, more or less, in three families or clans and am heartily pleased with my membership in this, my newest, clan

Oh, I forgot it was Jock's Balmoral.

I noticed the STM doesn't have navy blue Balmorals with the red tourie, or how ever you spell it.

Rehashing old threads is fun.

When I was with the color guard in the St. Andrew's Society, the only requirement was a hat (either a balmoral or a glengarry). My preference was glengarry, I was always told dicing was a military thing, so I ordered mine without.

I have since worn my clan badge on it, although for a couple of parades when I was a firefighter, I wore a hat badge from my fire department with it. I haven't been around these forums long enough to think about buying an XMTS badge, but I like the idea of them. I actually wanted to get at least a generic Saint Andrew's one for when I was with the color guard, but I never did.

Any colour combination is not impossible, you just need to ask the right person ?

I'm afraid I'm guilty of wearing Regimental insignia of regiments/corps that I've served in when wearing my kilt. So in this I don't agree with KDB above. What I object to is when people wear military (or police or other emergency service) insignia with the intent to give the impression that they were in that unit. Its almost as bad as wearing medals that are not yours.

BTB If out and about at the moment I don't wear anything that might look even a bit military - it may not be too healthy in N'orn Iron

As I've often pointed out before, the idea

Balmoral = civilian

Glengarry = military

is a modern 20th century one.

In The Highlanders of Scotland (56 portraits of kilted Highlanders in the 1860's) 25 of the men are wearing plain Glengarries, 22 are wearing plain Balmorals. Only three are wearing diced Balmorals, none are wearing diced Glengarries. Only four of the men are military, three are wearing Glens and one is wearing a Balmoral.

Here's the Glengarry and long hair sporran, both today thought of as military, but at that time both standard civilian wear:

I bit about federal law in the USA - skip if uninterested as this may be slightly off topic.

Although it is extremely unlikely that a District Attorney would prosecute a case or a law enforcement officer would make an arrest United States federal law includes the following:

10 USC, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 45, Section 771:

Except as otherwise provided by law, no person except a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, as the case may be, may wear -

(1) the uniform, or a distinctive part of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps; or

(2) a uniform any part of which is similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps.

The phrase "distinctive part of the uniform" would include rank, specialty and unit insignia.

Section 772 provides specific exceptions, such as actors in a theatrical production, and honorably discharged veterans of wars participating in patriotic parades and celebrations, but even honorably discharges veterans of wars are prohibited from wearing military insignia with civilian clothes for daily wear. It does seem this law is too broad and restrictive but cases have been brought as high as the Supreme Court and the law has stood up to challenges.
