David Mathews - 51st Gordon Highlanders (1941)
This vintage photo I found has been colourized in an 'artsy' funky manner,
but is still a good view of the high-waisted 'military rise' kilt:

David's photo aged 18 in 1941 taken as the joined up.
This was sent to his mother on the back he wrote:
"To Mother With Lots of Love Your Loving Son Dave xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxx xx"
David Mathews joined the 51st Gordon Highlanders when he was 18 years of age. Only a short time later his Regiment was taken prisoner of ware by the Germans. They were being marched through the woods in France and stopped to go to the toilet. David and his friend, Andrew lagged behind the rest of their regiment and managed to escape. They took refuge in a small village from the 11th November until February, 1941, spending time with various families, protected by the French resistance.
He eventually got safely home, after which he joined the paratroops in 1942 when the 51st Gordon Highlanders were disbanded.
