I love the concept. Someday, when my kids are out of college, I'd even consider ordering a kilt in a NY tartan. Won't be spending that kind of money on clothing before then.

My only comment on the actual design is that New York's official colors are blue and gold. I'd like to see a gold stripe in there.

As for approval, I know a few state legislators through my job and could probably get their support. My state assemblyman actually has his district office in the same building as the bar where we have our kilt nights.

Hmmm... perhaps a gold line in the blue in place of the thin gray lines? It could then be pleated to that gold stripe. I'd like to see how that looked (as long as it wasn't a bright yellow!)....

I'll see what I can work up with a gold stripe. The current design has six colors. If you go beyond that it's my understanding - correct me, someone, if I'm wrong, it adds to the difficulty of weaving and, therefore, the expense.

BTW, if anyone wants, as I am, to seek out advice on the best way to take this through the process, let's take it easy for now. Not only do we want to make sure we have our ducks in a row, but right now the Legislature is still struggling with approving a budget - 28 days late - and it's more important for them to finish that work than it is to take time to approve a tartan design.

    Thanks,

    Brian

PS - by take it easy, I mean look for advice, but let's not start lobbying or asking a legislator to sponsor anything until a more opportune time.

I used the Scotweb designer, and stuck with the 6 colors in the weavers section, and fiddled a bit...

    http://picasaweb.google.com/dr.jesse...eat=directlink

the ones with red, 2 blues, white, heather, green - roses, ladybugs and apples; lakes and bluebirds; milk; lilac; maples and forests

the ones with gold, 2 blues, white, heather green - pretty much the same, but incorporating the gold of the state colors and eliminated the red

just noticed the sett size indicator.... wasn't paying attention to that....

By the time we get anywhere with this, we'll be dealing with Governor Cuomo II.

LOL - I understand, but I only started this thread 3 days ago. We've just gotten started. We want to make sure we agree on a decent design - I don't assume the one in my OP is necessarily the version we'll go with. After we're sure what we want to present we have to approach the right people when the Legislature is not doing something that is obviously more important. I'm sure we can get everything done in a reasonable amount of time, but it's not likely it'll be fast enough for any of us. Have patience.

I heard back from my tartan designing friend and she thinks my design is solid but a bit drab . She likes the ideas suggesting referencing more colorful symbols of New York. She's going to come up with some suggestions and send some along. She lives in Alberta but she has spent a lot of time in Kingston and the Eastern Ontario area so she's familiar with what this part of the world looks like. She also thinks we ought to select a few (several?) designs so the legislators have a choice and they feel like they're actually taking part in the process and making a decision. The way she put it is that it's like a storekeeper offering you a choice between a red computer and a blue computer when you're not even sure you want a computer at all. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I'm back to the drawing board. Let's see if we can come up with a few variations on a theme and see what happens.
