    Hose alternative

Just suppose for a moment that $20 for a pair of hose is, uh, a little steep. For socks.

At least for casual wear, when not going the boots route, are there good socks out there for wearing with the kilt, and not looking, uh, slow?

It, uh, depends on the shoes. If you're wearing, uh, tennis shoes, then athletic socks (pushed down) can work. Sandals can work. Thin dress socks pulled up do not work. They look too much like dress socks pulled up.

Bite the bullet and get a pair or two of good hose. They'll last longer and be more comfortable than cheap socks, and look better, to boot. If you know a knitter, trade somethng for a pair of handmade hose. Mow their yard or rake their leaves or take thei children to the playground or something. Money and the lack thereof need not hold a person from having good stuff.

    W. Brewin & Co. Ltd. sell kilt hose for around $4.00/pair with reasonable shipping. They are not quite as nice (thinner, and not as tightly woven) as a $20.00 pair, but will pass.

If anyone is paying that much attention to your legs, they have the problem!!!

If you are wearing boots (like a Dr. Martens 1460 8-eye), you will want to scrunch your hose/socks down anyways, so a regular hiking boot will work in a pinch.

Look for some good quality boot socks that come up the calf near the knee. They look enough like kilt hose that you will not turn heads, and you won't look funky.

I've worn them while hiking, and they're usually made of a very good material for hard wear. I.e., they last pretty well, and they can be had for less than kilt hose. Chekc out somewhere like Bass Pro Shops of Sportsmansguide.com.

Try sockdreams.com, the cotton slouch socks are $5 a pair and come in a variety of colors. I just got 4 pair and will place another order shortly, they are very comfortable.

*** for sock dreams. Evil place, considering I have a s... um... I mean, I appreciate a nice pair of lower leg wear... ahem...

Anyway, I've gotten a couple of these socks, which as brower said come in about a dozen colours. 8$ with free shipping (or least it was free last time I ordered from them).

I've also heard people talk about soccer socks? They're tall, they come in lots of colours, they're cheap. Probably find them in any sporting goods store.

Also, if you can get past your machismo, check out the women's sock department in Target or Wal-Mart. I've found some nice socks there in the past that could work. The women's department is a good place to look for kilt belts, too, BTW. They get all cool accessories.

Or, like AZWildcat said, check out wbsocks on eBay. For a few dollars you can get a pair of cream hose, and for a couple bucks more you can pick up some dye and make them any colour you like.

Cream!?!?!? I never suggested cream. They do have colored hose for around the same price as the cream ones. I just checked and they are 4.50 GBP (around $6.50 US) per pair.

Here's a link to their direct site:

Or you could look them up on ebay too.

My apologies When I was looking them up, I was explicitly looking for white or cream so I could dye them. I ignored their actual coloured hose

And I think these are the socks that bower had mentioned. They have even more colours to choose from (and are cheaper than) the sock dreams socks I linked earlier!

No worries...I didn't mean to sound like a kilt snob with the anti-cream comment...I am suggesting discount hose, after all.
