How about a modified 'Ike' jacket? .
I'd prefer a nicer fabric (tweed or woolen suiting material) and toned down button though, with the brass buttons it looks like part of a policeman's uniform.
It's about as close to an uniquely "American-Style" as I could come up with. With it's short waist, it would ride similarly to a doublet.
