I wondered about this myself. Hereabouts we wear a gown closed at the front. Do our neighbors wear them open?
I've seen in UK films, university faculty going about their daily educational business with a gown open in front. However I don't know whether it's closed for ceremonial purposes. Can anyone enlighten us?

Correct, the young man will be wearing a graduation gown that will hide whatever he has on underneath it.
So why the opposition to the kilt...in this case or any of these prom cases that keep coming up?
I gotta think that the people who are denying these students the right to wear the kilt are doing it because they have that ridiculous problem with "what's under the kilt".
Okay...THE SAME THNG THAT'S UNDER THE TROUSERS, YOU JACKASSES! Grow up.

In the British Commonwealth, academic gowns for Bachelor's and Master's degrees are worn open, while US gowns are worn closed.

I swear, they all have genuphobia. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
If no kilt, wear the gown closed, and wear nothing but boxer shorts. That, or similar, is pretty standard practice around here for large group graduations where the gown is usually worn closed.

*News update:
Just logged onto FB and saw that Hamish posted 2 recent status updates in the past hour. Seems like the school district may have reversed their stance on his wearing the kilt at graduation and have acknowledged his rights.

Thank you, everyone, for taking an interest in my nephew and the wearing of the kilt. The battle's o'er! Commonsense prevaileth.
Hamish will be allowed to wear my kilt at his graduation. The school board made that decision this afternoon.

Wa-Hey! Congratulations to your nephew! Another victory for common sense and tradition over petty tyranny.

Just seen the news on Facebook. Well done Hamish and all those who supported him. Common sense rules once again. Wear your kilt with pride young man and congrats on graduating.

The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.
