It is best to go with a darker waistcoat that way it hides behind the jacket. If it is lighter or a completely different colour then it will constantly be calling attention to itself.

Normally I would agree, but sometimes you want the waistcoat to call attention to itself. There used to be a fine tradition of wearing 'loud' waistcoats under a plain colored jacket.

I agree totally but that takes a great skill not to look old or stupid. I admit I haven't got that skill, yet I hope. So I take the safer path for the time being.
