wearing of the kilt
There have been recent threads about high school seniors being denied the right to wear their kilt to proms or graduation. Well, we here in Northeastern Pennsylvania are never at the forefront of new ideas or trends. Rather we are always several years behind in accepting anything new. However a young man wore his kilt to the senior prom and low and behold the dress code gestapo did not storm the place and drag him out. The young man then wore his kilt under his graduation gown and that got his picture and a nice mention in the local newspaper. "dressed in full Scottish regalia" was the way they put it. I can't identify the tartan from the picture but he is handsomely decked out in a traditional kilt with hose and flashes and white spats.

The paper is The Pittston Sunday Dispatch. The photo was in the printed version. I cannot find it on the internet version of the paper.

I have always said it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I'd amend that to 'often easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission' but yeah...
School administrators seem to have a problem when coming to reasonable policy decisions. It seems like the more they think about something the more preposterous the result. For example: 'zero tolerance' policies of any kind are pretty much the end result of distilling a bad idea until you have all the impurities removed and are left with only pure, concentrated stupid.
Thus, anyone who wishes to attend prom wearing the traditional formal clothing of their ancestors should just do it and simply be prepared to calmly and intelligently explain the origin of the formal dress.

The Kilt: a manly garment (and some advice)
Living in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s I wore my kilt to two Proms in 1964, and three in 1965-- it never occurred to me to ask permission. I just did it, and no one said anything. From the waist up it was black tie, same as all the other lads in their tuxedos, save for one thing: mine wasn't rented (or a funny pastel shade of blue or green). From the waist down it was kilt, sporran, tartan hose and shiny black shoes.
I didn't make an issue of my mode of attire before the event, and no one made an issue of it at the event. But then back in the 60s most guys weren't drama queens, unlike a lot of today's lads.
The kilt is a manly form of dress. Act like a man, wear it like a man, and you won't have any problems. Act like a whiny kid...

Ah man!! Now that song from Abba, "Dancing Queen," is stuck in my head!!
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Is there an official X Marks the Scot "Words of Wisdom" quote area. If so, this needs to be there.
