When it comes to bacon grease, there is some possibility of a spot melting on the PV. It likely would not melt through, but the polyester may be hurt. With either fabric, a regular cook's apron should protect it.
When washing the PV, leave off the fabric softener. Over time, it can degrade the protective coating. Ditto if you should hand wash one of the wools with Teflon.
My USA PV's have been washed and hung to dry repeatedly. I hang the kilt carefully, smoothing the pleats as I do. When it's mostly dry, I smooth the pleats again. They have not been touched by an iron since USAK set the pleats.
Ah, one more caveat: no kilt should be "touched" by an iron. Always use a press cloth, and set the temp according to the fabric. See the write-ups here, in TAoK, or Bob Martin's book for more detail.

Thank You
Every one has been very helpful. It looks as if I am going to give PV a try, mainly because it is machine washable and teflon coated.
One of my problems is Tartan availability in PV, but I guess you can't have it all.
Rocky at USA Kilts seems to have an excellent reputation on this forum. It does appear, however, that there seems to be at least 2 other purveyors of PV. Does any one know if there is a marked difference in quality, service, or price between them?
Thanks in advance.

PV Choices
I can only speak to the one PV Kilt I own and the kilt maker. I bought mine from Skye Highland Outfitters and am extremely happy. Josh is very good to work with, was prompt in replies to inquiries and the kilt is very well made.
As this is the classiest kilt I own I have worn it, to date, largely for a step above casual occassions and it looks excellent. Mine is in Isle of Skye tartan is is gorgeous. I would definitely make inquiries with Skye Highland.
