Also, as you mentioned, everyone will be acutely aware of the difference between a "traditional" tartan kilt and everything else ...so I'm not gonna stress over it. Kilts and kilt-like articles of clothing are becoming more common, but the kilt's place seems to be quite firmly set in the public mind, if worn with style as opposed to statement.

It's already out there? See how much I keep up with trends?
I concur. No matter what becomes popular the traditional kilt, and for that matter the modern contemporary kilt was here first and will be here after, as will the folks who wear them. Who knows, maybe it will spur a few people to get into it who will learn to do it right and stay with it. All I know is I can't see the future, or bits and pieces of the past either.
BTW, if a "man purse" is called a Murse, would a "man dress" be a Mess?

I've had 99% positive reactions to the kilt over the years. Back in the 80s, I would get an occasional "wolf-whistle" or snide remark but that all died away in the 90s. I did have one reaction from a bunch of young punks in a convenience store once. One remarked "I'm glad I don't have to wear one of those things!" Snickers from the others... So I broke my usual practice of ignoring idiots, turned around and told him: "Nobody HAS to wear one of these. In fact there are 3 good reasons why one would NOT wear one. 1. Not of Scottish ancestry, 2. Just don't care for the style, or 3. He's not man enough."

I suppose, that is how it is in Scotland for us, certainly for me and I think most kilt wearers in Scotland.I don't consciously think of the culture thing, historical aspect, or the showing off bit.
I do recall that in my youth, however, when I spent most of my time in England, I did on many an occasion wear the kilt to parties, dances and dinners, as I had worked out from a fairly early age that the girls like a man in the kilt.

I am one of those who could not care less.
I have had people ask all the questions. When a lady at a local convenience store asked about my skirt and I mentioned it was a kilt she said yes, that is what I meant but could not think of the word.
So, most of the people I have talked to have positive reactions. I did have one guy whose wife wanted a picture with me grumble a bit. We said she would probably want him to wear one. I told him if he did he would learn how comfortable a kilt is.
