"Nice Sporran"

I often wear a sporran with jeans just to have the extra storage capacity. I get comments on it then and quite a few people recognize that it is, indeed, a sporran and not some kind of inverted (you should excuse the expression) fanny-pack. There have been several times when a dad will point it out to on of his children, as in, "...oh, look, Louie...that guy over there is wearing a sporran." It's kinda re-assuring to know that we are living in not-totally-clueless times.

So I do take Rocky's point that it's often an example of the party letting you know that he or she knows what it is and is, thus, one of the "in crowd".

I think it's probably somewhere between the two. He might actually like the sporran, we do of course like plain sporrans as well as fancy ones. And the fact that he knows enough about what a sporran actually is and doesn't have to resort to the 'nice kilt' comment that is commonly heard could have made him feel like he was in the know.

This sends me down memory lane...

Years ago, I played with the City of McPherson PB (Kansas). At a competition (don't remember which), one of our pipers received the comment "nice sporran" on his score sheet! We didn't know if this was sarcasm, or an effort to say something nice in place of nothing at all...In any case, it became a bit of a catch phrase among the band's drum corps. We used it to call each other out when someone forgot or muffed his part, as well as a sort of "aloha:" hello, goodbye, and any number of things that are forbidden by the rules of this forum.

Not very helpful or informative, I know, but makes for a good-ish story.

I receive the "nice sporran" comment frequently. Mostly from the ladies. I asked one commenting lady about it, and she confirmed my suspicions. She knew all about highland wear, and wanted me to know that she did. Plus she really did like the sporran.

Interestingly, I often get that comment on my day sporran (embossed with my clan symbols and covered with skunk fur), but never on the beautiful pewter and grey horsehair formal sporran I bought in St. Andrews!!

I have received the "nice sporran" comment quite a bit recently, because I'm wearing an unusually ornate Edwardian cantle with a long goathair sporran these days:




(yes I know I shouldn't be wearing that sporran with Day Dress but I don't have any sort of Day sporran at this time...)
