Ryan Ross/STM New Bunnets
I looked and looked at Ryan Ross' bunnets on the STM website, and finally decided that I must have one in grey and one in brown. I just love these bunnets! They are everything I had hoped they would be. I was looking for something more historically accurate than a modern bunnet, yet still sharp looking. But most importantly, what stands out about these bunnets are the elegant, simple and clean lines. They manages to be striking and understated at the same time, truly a feat.
The bunnets have a great hand. And the craftsmanship is first rate--there is a reason why hand crafted items are prized, you can feel the difference in many respects.
Ryan Ross makes a better model for his own product than do I, but I include photos of me proudly wearing them. Unlike my Mackie, I do not intend to Jock them--the hang of them is perfect right from the off--
I think these are going to get a great deal of wear...

The brown:
As I say, Mr. Ross is a better model--and here he is in the blue:
"Before two notes of the theme were played, Colin knew it was Patrick Mor MacCrimmon's 'Lament for the Children'...Sad seven times--ah, Patrick MacCrimmon of the seven dead sons....'It's a hard tune, that', said old Angus. Hard on the piper; hard on them all; hard on the world." Butcher's Broom, by Neil Gunn, 1994 Walker & Co, NY, p. 397-8.

Thanks for the review. I agree with everything you have said about Ryan's excellent bonnets; those are some of the very reasons I wanted to be able to offer them through our gift shop. One of the many pleasures I have working at the museum is being able to discover talented artists who truly care about traditional hand crafts and then showcasing their products to the public through the gift shop.
I think the reason why you don't think they need to be "jocked" to break them in is that each bonnet is felted and shaped by hand before it is shipped out, which is essentially what "jocking" does to a bonnet.
Here's a direct link to where you can read more about these bonnets and purchase your own:

And just to prove I'm not just blowing smoke, I'm also a customer (twice over)!

Congratulations on the new purchases, BobsYourUncle! They're real beauties and you wear them well.
Some more amazing needle-work from Mr. Ross, I love the fact that they're pre-felted and shaped as well. Not everyone has a Highland stream to immerse them in like Jock Scot
