Not to belabour the point, but the creation of a tartan with proportions that can be interpreted in different ways was one of the ideas I had in mind for some time.

When I ordered my Hudson's Bay tartan box pleat, Steve Ashton showed me the various ways he could use the pattern for different effects. That bit of education influenced the final design, which had started out in the grand scale of the Matheson but ended up much smaller, yet still keeping references to both Gordon and Matheson. The actual thread count was finessed by Gordon Kirkbright [who designed the Hudson's Bay], as was the exact choice of thread colours.

Presumably, the same tartan could be pleated to have the black or indigo predominate--and of course, the pattern would present in an entirely different way if pleated to say, a kingussie pleat.

Lady Chrystel's Kingussie kilts are a dream to wear ... !
I wear mine very often.

It is a fact that you can have two VERY different kilts with the same tartan.
