I don't believe she is a racist, everyone gets treated the same there...like crap.
The first (and last) time I was there she was commiserating with another grump who had walked in. She was talking about "Gd Republicans, Gd tourists, Gd people in her shop, and Gd people touching her merchandise (looking at me with some things in my hand for purchase". I continued around the shop and gathered the things I wanted to buy. She was ringing up my items (the $400+ total changed her tone) and I apologized for bothering her with my presence and walked out while she was bagging up the stuff. I could still hear her screaming half way to Jack othe Woods.
As an added insult, she had identified my tartan (MacLean Hunting, Ancient) to the other grump as a Campbell tartan...that's really what did it .

The comic potential overwhelms me
Set up some hidden cameras and send in Craig Ferguson or Alan Cumming, maybe Billy Connolly. Ooh! Jimmy Carr.
Let her try to tell one o' them what's what.
I cringe in anticipation. Think we can pitch it to BBC America?

There was (an apparently) mentally ill woman who ran a used bookstore somewhere in Ontario who clearly only kept the doors open so she could berate and insult people who stepped in. The thing was, she was so offensive that one had to suspect that there might be great stuff unsold and hidden in the shelving disaster that was her stock-in-trade, so fanatics such as myself did bravely enter from time to time-with zero success on my part at least. Maybe this current lady dangles her Celtic stuff for the same mad reason.
Edit: MJBoston, it occurs to me that the shop lady may have decided that your parents 'march on the wrong side of the (Irish) parade.' If that was so I apologise for, well, everyone on 'my side' of said parade.

If she's still in business when I get around to visiting Asheville again, I'm going to drop in just for the lulz . What a find...it's guaranteed entertainment, and it's free!

This is quite satisfying. I hope the witch Googles her own store.

About four years ago the wife and I walked in to look up a bit of the wife's heritage and received similar treatment. And all this time I was thinking that it was that I told her my family was originally from Hungary. We let her rant a bit and then went about our merry. And never had a better time while we were there despite her attempts to bring us to her level. Somehow we missed Jack O' the Wood which is amazing since we both like pub food and the wife loves Guinness.

I was warned that she could be a piece of work but was curious so I went to check the store out. I guess she was in a good mood that day or I had sufficient knowledge about my clan because she gave me her card and told me that if I ever needed anything to call and she would be happy to help. My friend who brought me to the store left with his jaw hanging. He said that he had never seen or heard of her being so nice to anyone. I guess she is particular to the Ferguson clan?

Maybe I am a bit twisted, but now I want to go and check this place out. If I am ever traveling through NC I am definitely going to stop in her store.
