Great photos Matt! I love that grey check kilt jacket.

Here are some photos showing nice use of pattern in Highland Dress

To my eye, check, windowpane, and houndstooth tweed all look great for kilt jackets.

Richard, I LOVE that illustration. Every time I see it, it makes me want to find and buy the brass cantle shown on the left.

Artificer, if you can find those brass cantles anywhere, can you buy me one too

Will do! My plan would be a very basic 'purse' style bag for it... That work for you?

If I get really desperate, I might tap a few industrial metal workers I know about fabrication, but I'd rather have vintage stuff.

For those wishing to see an excellent example of "toning" patterns, here is a photo of the late Lord Lovat of the Clan Fraser:

Look how low the pockets are. Do you think Lovat is wearing a converted jacket? There are none of the other typical kilt jacket treatments (e.g. epaulets, either of the highland-style cuffs, etc.).

I think that one needs to be very careful how one reads a picture. It is what it is for sure, but any further conclusions to be drawn from it, is pure conjecture.

The only conclusion I wish to draw from the photo is whether I've been misguided in my belief that the pockets of a converted jacket sit too low. They are usually about an inch to an inch-and-a-half lower than those on modern kilt jackets, but trends come and go. I'm just trying to make informed conclusions. No harm intended.
