This is a cheap design for mass quick kilts used in an annual Highland Games event. In no way is this supposed to be an official kilt. Thanks for the comments. And please for all you super serious kilt experts have fun with your own designs."
so there is SOME explanation to the kilt, for what it is worth....

I guess I am forced to retract some of my snarky comments. He COULD have said that in the actual video...
Although I can't imagine seeing a kilt like that worn at a Highland Games, apart from by someone with a woad (artificial) painted face.

Aye, but which one of us have NOT seen many crimes against Highland attire committed at Highland Games events? (Seeing a heavy event competitor wearing his kilt backwards - pleats forward two years ago comes to mind)...

And at Highland Games the number of people that won't have to press their pleats because they left the basting stitches in!

Okay...I guess I can't bag on the guy for a lack of research on his part when I didn't bother to look at his post to see if there were any notes tagged to it.
Is that farm-fresh egg on my face??? Why, I believe I will make an egg sandwich.

I've seen this too, but I thought it happened during the spin tossing the stone or hammer? You know, centripetal force carried his pleats around the front?

But the whole thing is mirror imaged, the pleats run clockwise, rather than the standard way, the loose fabric is at the front and over the right shoulder rather than at the back and over the left.
It is just so wrong.

Then again, even if he were serious, it's probably best not to criticize him too hard. None of us were born with the knowledge we have, and if everyone could just sit down and knock out a kilt as well as Barb or Matt or any other known kiltmaker, there would be many more people doing it. Until I actually sit down and make one myself I'm not going to point my finger at anyone...
I couldn't do what he did....on the other hand I wouldnt want too either!!!!

As for the video, I had two roommates who decided to make a kilt out of a pattern they got at, I believe, Walmart.... Now, if these two had been going to represent a particular clan or were intent on "doing it right", of course I would have stepped in offered what gentle direction I could. As it was, however, my friends were only in search of a 'simple, easy-to-make' costume to wear to the Ren Faire the next day. At that point, as long as they know the pleats go in the back, more power to them. It's highly likely that the majority of patrons at the faire wouldn't know the difference anyway. I think the same goes to the makers of this video. Could more context been put into the video/description? Of course but then again, I'm sure Karl just wanted to provide his online community of youtubers with a kilt-like pattern instruction not too unlike the ones that my friends did indeed wear to the Ren Faire. I'm certain he never thought twice about the Kilt Police flagging him down and giving him "pleating tickets"....
Plus, he's college age... and for those who don't remember, 18 is when you THINK you know everything, college is when you KNOW you do....
