Where do all the kilties go?!

It reminds me of all the "bikers" around here to tool up to Sturgis(150 miles) for the rally then park the bike until the Lions Club has a poker run.

I agree with the "testicular fortitude" problem. Last weekend a guy said to me "I think it's cool but I could never wear one." I just said "You're probably right." I'm always the only kilted man anywhere I go except Celtic fest's and the like. Kind of depressing, but I won't let it bother me.

I guess people think of it as a formal or really dressy garment and think it can only be worn for special occasions.

I've been asked many times "whats the special occasion" my on reply I ever give is "I woke up today still breathing, everyday you wake up still breathing is a day worth celebrating." I know atleast one friend who is planning on getting a kilt. He is going through a bit of weight loss right now and is waiting for that to level out. I'm thinking about getting him a SWK to get him kilted till he gets his tank.

I agree, most kilts seem to leave closets for special occassions exclusively. I guess that if someone doesn't want to wear it otherwise, then that is there business. Those who wear a kilt at a wedding probably rent their kilts, just as people rent tuxedos for weddings etc. Yuck, tuxedos *shakes in disgust*, what a waiste of perfectly good fabric.

Anyways, there has to be some way to encourage Closet Kilties to wear their kilt as clothing at least occasionally. We could start a weekly get-together called "Kilters Anonymous, drink 'til yee burn yee breaches" (I know, terrible accent and terrible pun). The purpose of each get-together would be to just have the Closet Kilties get used to wearing their kilt in public; to build their confidence. They could choose a different bar/restaurant to go to each week(or even bi-monthly) for dinner and just have a good time.

we where talking about this yesterday at the Charleston Games. Why can so many ppl show up at one place and all in kilts, but try to spot one out in a crowd on a regular day, and you will probably only see me.

I think some in this thread are being a bit unfair. Isn't Xmarks supposed to be a place for all kilt-wearers, even those who do not wear their kilts on a regular basis?

I do not wear a kilt on an everyday basis; I wear it for functions of Scottish organizations of which I am a member. I suppose that makes me a "weekend warrior" in some people's eyes, but in the words of the poem The Little Red God:

Wear the garments he likes to wear,
Never dreaming that people stare;

One of our former moderators used to say, whenever this topic pop up, that without the "weekend wallaces" that only wore their kilts for special occasions, there would be no full-time kilt wearers.

If we're going to demand the general public accept the kilt as a normal garment, then shouldn't we do the same for those who choose not to wear their kilt on a regular basis?

Respect is a two-way street.

I don't think anyone meant to bash those who reserve the kilt for special occasions. After reading through the thread I suppose one could take it that way though...and I share a bit of the blame.

I wear it on a regular basis, but not daily. I don't see it as a "dress up" item by itself as some do. On the other hand, and in all fairness, I do not purchase expensive kilts. Dollar figures carry a great deal of weight in peoples' decision on when and where to wear it. My most expensive kilt is still under $300 but, I admit, is reserved for dressier occasions.

A lot of other people only own one kilt. Often it is an expensive item, or even a family heirloom. I admit that if my only kilt was was worth more than my truck(which isn't really saying much) or was an antique, it probably would be in the vault at the bank and would be worn for only the most grand of events, provided the risk of damage is minimal.

Agreed though...there shouldn't be rifts between the daily kilters, part time kilters, and special occasion kilters. Apologies to anyone offended.

Agreed.......as long as everyone is promoting the wearing of some type of kilt at some point, who cares, right? We are all part of this community because we enjoy kilting (or even just dreaming about kilting) in the settings we feel comfortable in.

Sorry if we offended you. I never intended to say those who only wear a kilt for celtic events weren't real kilties. May I ask why you don't wear it more often?

I understand if your talking about a high value tank as why you wouldn't break it out to mow the lawn but even a tank would be nice for a long walk in the evening or going to dinner at a nice restraunt with the wife/GF. (don't bring both wife and GF at the same time its guaranteed to ruin your tank then)

I'm not saying you must wear your kilt everyday to be a true kiltie, but why must you see your kilt as a costume not a normal garment.

Its hard to convince the general public that a kilt is a normal garment when the majority of kilties see it as a costume to be worn to celtic events and weddings only.

So I guess that the Highland Games is the attraction in Summer and Scottish Country Dancing in winter, and seldom the twain do meet.!

Unlike a certain signal box man in Scotland who wears his kilt everyday come rain or shine! I wonder who that is???
