Accessories - What's on Your "Want" List?

I have seen some absolutely beautiful Scottish thistle belt buckle designs which I would be proud to own, but something inside me says I should look for a protea, a strelitzia, a springbok, a blue crane or a secretary bird (to name a few possibilities).

There's something to think about!

I suppose here the motifs could be things like racoon, coyote, road runner, palm tree, cactus...

Which reminds me, I met a family visiting from Australia who were absolutely convinced that racoons, road runners and coyotes were imaginary creatures. I told them I recently saw a coyote in my back yard and that racoons prowl around every night, but they thought I was putting them on/pulling their leg.

Oh, they're real alright! We had a roving band of racoons clear out two koi ponds over a period of a few nights. Funny thing is that we "found" one of the larger koi next door in their pool. Actually, our neighbor was shocked to find it there. Apparently, racoons like to take their catch to a clean water source to wash it before dining. This unlucky koi excaped its' captor, but perrished in the highly chlorinated pool.

The best revenge on these pesky things, I find, is to make sporrans out of them.

...speaking of, I'm tanning some...self harvested...grey squirrel pelts, currently. I think two of them, carefully joined, could make a sporran facing. Hmm...

Aye, if only the city ordinances didn't ban picking the little buggers off, AND state law bans trapping for fur without a licence. Those little blighters are better protected than a mafia boss.

Plus, my wife would kill me if I started filling the garage with dead raccoons. It's bad enough for her now that my office & workroom are filled with various animal bits and skins.

Staghorn does some fine sporrans using skins from springbok, ostrich, wildebeest, and the like, and matching buckles ... but the metalwork is all typical celtic motifs. Nice stuff, but I'd rather see them do a celtic version of a springbok than a stag, or whatever.

Since I am negotiating with Staghorn about having a sporran made from my caracal pelt, I must say that I share your disappointment. Perhaps I should drop some suggestions in that direction!

While I have my doubts about such a pocket being suitable for a firearm, I certainly plan to order all my kilts with that type of pocket for my handkerchiefs. The darned things always went musty in my army pouch.

And in closing, having done a bit of research on First World War-style army tam o’shanters, I have learnt that Robert Mackie makes them, and can do them in other colours than khaki and black.
I have just dropped them a line saying that while I had had my heart set on one in royal blue, a dark green would be very fine, too. I wonder how much extra they would charge for the special colour material, though.
Yesterday James Byous informed me that he does not make them (working with the stiffener material is rather messy, he says), but recommendied Mackies.
