Personally I like the toorie. It gives the bonnet a clear Scottish identity (even if French sailors also wear red pompoms!)
I have always liked the style of my army tammie, and I plan to order a new one next year (bigger on top, and different colour, but definitely army style, and with a matching toorie).
Another advantage of the bonnet over the hat is that it can be folded up and put into a pocket. You can’t do that with a trilby or a Tyrolean!
