Some folks are very staunch about their kilts, and will only wear a family connected tartan. However, there's no law stating that you can't wear another family's tartan. I would, however, look into the history of that family's tartan so you can inform people about the kilt when you get asked, "Is that your family tartan," or "What tartan is that?"
