In the hierarchy of dress sporrans silver mounted hair or fur is king of the hill. Running them a close second are sporrans where the mounts (ie: cantle) are silver plated.

A notch below silver mounted sporrans are full-mask sporrans, with muskrat, badger, and wild cat leading the parade.

My advice would be to look for a used sealskin sporran with either a silver or silver plated cantle. If you shop wisely you should find either one in the $500-$1000 range. Expensive? Undoubtedly. But in the coming years they will be virtually unobtainable, and prices will shoot through the roof.

For about half the money you can buy a new muskrat sporran and, frankly, they are probably the best choice (setting aside potential collector value) as they can be worn with both day and evening wear.

As far as sgians dubh are concerned, I'd suggest searching out a quality, silver mounted antique (anything made much before 1970), as it will only appreciate in value. Modern, mass produced sgians dubh (even ones costing well over $100) just don't measure up in terms of quality or long term value.
