DEEPER pleats. Choose the pleating to the sett for.
-
MORE pleats. Those SIC pleats, Inverse, uh, Cheat pleats, or whatever they are look good to me.
-
Yer bonkers. You need another option.

More Pleats or Deeper?
I'm looking hard at my new MacDonald of Clanranald muted tartan cloth for pleating and can't quite decide what to do. Normally I would lean to pleating to the stripe, but the attractive interplay between the Blue and Green seems to get lost when they're not presented together to my eye. That leaves pleating to the sett which limits my preferred options to two for this 6ish yard kilt.
1. 18, 1+" wide, 3+" deep pleats pleated properly to sett
2. 24, 3/4" wide, 2¼" deep Short,/Inverse pleats, what has been called pleated "to the Cheat", (SIC pleats)

option 1, sett pleats ................ - ........ option 2, SIC pleats
There is virtually no difference in the yardage between the two options and I quite like them both aesthetically so I thought I'd put it to the rabble here. For the technical function of wearing said pleats alone, which should I choose, more shallower pleats or fewer deeper pleats, and why?

I have to vote for option one...but it's only because of the way the collors play out in your pics. Ultimately though I go with the one that produces the better hanging and swinging pleat.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

Honestly, it's not going to make a whit of difference. The difference between 2 1/2" and 2 1/4" pleats is trivial. Pick the one you like the look of best.
If you want a kilt that really swings, though, more yardage would really make the difference (i.e., an 8 yard kilt, instead of a 6 yard kilt).

Ah heck, my bad, the sett pleats would be over 3" deep.

Oh I do and that's what the other bolt is for.

pleating
Well X,
If you like the looks of both of them relative to their resulting color schemes, and Barb says it doesn't make a difference in the way the kilt moves, I would go with the option that results in the most pleats.
There's two cents worth for you!

Xman, I originally deleted this thread and got some complaints from some of the other posters who's responses were well thought out, and upset to find their posts gone.
I'm only going to close this thread for now.

This post is a natural product made from Recycled electrons. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects.

Thanks folks, this is all part of my steep learning curve too.
And I have also now learned from XMan's new post what he meant by TMI!
Regional Director for Scotland for Clan Cunningham International, and a Scottish Armiger.
