An interesting observation. May I ask if the people with that point of view are from the Highlands and secondly, would they be of the younger generations from Scotland as a whole?Thirdly are the people with that view from Scotland?

A significant amount of people with this view, I have found are from the Highlands as well as the Lowlands, and they mainly belong to my age group which is 18-30.gs,
Whenever I have encountered people wearing kilts as part of the tartan army, weddings, travelling abroad etc. The aesthetic appeal of tartan is, I would say the deciding factor when choosing a tartan to wear. I personally have never worn my tartan (mcgregor). I wear buchanan modern, despite never having a relative with the buchanan surname. I wear it purely because I like the colour.

Well well, that is interesting particularly the age group, although I am not surprised by the "Tartan Army" point of view! Thank you.

Interesting to read different points of view from different Scots on the question. Thank you to both Jock and Jock for both points of view. Seems to be differing opinions on both sides of the pond.

I think you are quite right there and without sounding too much of a boring old codger, in my experiance(sorry to sound patronising young Jock! ) many thirty year old kilt wearing "rebels" become forty five year old staunch traditionalists! However, in the long run it is almost inevitable that traditions change and perhaps young Jock's generation will do the changing? Good luck to you laddie, it is your generation's future that matters, not mine!

Don't worry laddie I am not planning bowing out just yet! But at the age of three score years and ten, plus a wee tad, one does have to face an unpalatable and inevitable fact! You are quite right though, we all do matter!![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
Nevertheless it is a young person's world, it always has been, and whilst us old codgers may be able to assist in some small way with their experience, it seems that the younger generation are determined, however much they deny it(I did!), to make some of the same mistakes that we did and our ancestors probably did! However these youngsters do come with fresh inquiring minds and amaze the world with some new progressive idea that astounds us all and that is great and it is also necessary! So I will stick with trying to pass on what I know----a little bit about kilts perhaps--- for as long as people are willing to listen and that is fine by me and I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that in 40 years time the likes of Young Jock will say exactly what I am saying!.

Hey Jock, so glad you're "not bowing out," yet!
I do agree with you, though. As a person probably not too far behind your years of wisdom, I still hope I matter, especially since I stand in front of a classroom all day with young people. Sometimes I wonder if they "get it!" I guess the the generation in front of us said the same thing, eh?
Yeah, young Jock will have an epiphany as he gets older...with ages comes wisdom (most of the time).

I still need to get over Jock's way, get a personal tour of Keppoch (land of my ancestors), & share a wee dram by the River Ness with him!
