Source for quality formalwear in the US

What the title says...anybody have a favorite men's clothier that does online business here in the US? I'm in search of a good source US based source for reasonably priced, quality tux shirts, bowties, and cummerbunds (and three button vests too for that matter)?

To make it clear what I'm asking for, I'm talking about top shelf quality here. I'm not looking for a $40 shirt. I'm more than willing to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 for the appropriate quality. Every tux shirt I've bought before this was almost see thru fabric in the sleeves...cheap cotton in my opinion...and they shrunk and were unwearable after 2 events. I have looked at Brooks Brothers and, while they may sell quality goods, I think that their prices reflect a bit too much about the name and don't have as much to do with the quality. I'm not saying they sell crap...but I think their shirts are probably a $70 shirt with a $135 price tag. Same with their tie and cummerbund choices.

I believe that it was MoR that recently shared his favorite source for shirts...but it was UK based. Anybody have anything good here stateside?

    Shirts

I know it's not necessarily known for its formal wear, but Sierra Trading Post has some high end, high quality dress shirts for significantly reduced prices.

They even have some in Gingham and Tattersal patterns!

    May be worth a look.

Check out J. Press and Ben Silver. Both top quality; the latter quite pricey.

I agree with you about the "quality vs price" issue with formal shirts sold by Brooks Brothers; I am also put off by the limited range offered in their shops. My experience in buying on-line from Eade and Ravenscroft has been one of total satisfaction, with delivery usually taking five business days.

One place you might want to try is one of those "custom shirt" shops that one sees in larger cities, and advertising in the back of in-flight magazines.

A Ben Silver shirt will probably run well over $200!

    Try:

    Jos. A. Bank,
    Suit Yourself,
    ExecStyle,
    Paul Stuart,
    Hansen's Clothing,
    Direct Clothiers,
    David's Formalwear,
    Hickey Freeman,
    Ralph Lauren...

Yes I just went through this, and have done a bit of research. Good luck.

Yeah...no kidding...$225! Are they hand sewing it with perfect hand stitches made of the highest quality silk thread on the market??? I don't think Ben Silver will be on my shopping list...however J. Press seems to have decent prices. Thanks for the recommendation Sandy.

Thanks for the list...any dealings with any of these companies?

I found this in my searching for a shirt. I think it's a front runner at the moment. The thing I like about it...100% Made in the USA. I'm always skeptical when items say "imported".

I recently got a new shirt from Jos. A. Banks and have been very pleased. It's not a tux shirt, but a french cuff, oxford collar dress shirt. The material is good, it's stood up well after several wearings and washings, and everything still looks fresh. I believe I spent in the $70 price range.

I was quite impressed with E&R's items. The one that I particularly loved was the cummerbund. Nobody ever shows the back of the cummerbund in their online pics, but that seems to be thing that differentiates them in my book. I find that odd. You show me the front of one in a picture and I think..."OK...looking at a standard 4/5 pleat cummerbund in black silk satin/grosgrain". They all look the same!!! What does the back band and closure look like? Is it cheap elastic? Is it a wider silk fabric with some elastic inserted in it? What does the buckle look like?? That was the thing I really liked about E&Rs picture...it had a nice wide silk band with a nice looking buckle. I know there are several of you reading this that say "Why's it matter...nobody ever sees the back". Somewhat true...but with my Army Mess Jacket, it's short enough where it doesn't take much of a reach to show that cheap plastic fastex buckle!!!

That's the kind of review I'm looking for! I've bough from Jos. Bank before if I recall and seemed to think they were decent quality. Nice to get some recent personal experience there!
