    Wool X-Kilt?

I was in the fabric store the other day, shopping for fleece for my Inverness cape project, and I noticed some "coat weight" gray wool.

Today I found the X-kilt plans through this forum, and it got me thinking about the possibility of making an X-kilt from the gray wool. I'd mainly use it for camping, hiking or similar. The material was $24 a yard for 60" so I'd probably get 4 yards and make two of them (maybe one for someone else).

Has anyone made an X-kilt from wool, and/or does anyone have thoughts about the idea as a concept?

Plenty of people have done it and it has worked well. The idea behind the X-kilt was that it was a kilt anyone could make on any budget. If wool is what tickles your funny bone, go for it!

I suppose my main concern was that the extra thickness of the wool would cause some difficulty in the pattern.

Sounds like you're headed for a sort of hybrid here. I'd suggest that you might acquaint yourself with some of the basic trad kilt construction techniques that might make the job easier.

Just how heavy is this wool? Remember that trad kilts are mostly made out of worsted which is heavy but still relatively "un-thick" and very flexible....a lot of coats are made out of a sort of "melton" type wool (like car coats and pea coats...not sure if melton is the correct word but it's as close as I can think of) and that's rather thick compared to worsted...doesn't have the same swing, either.

    It's "medium"

I think you're right -- it's probably heavier than my traditional wool kilts, and now that you mention it, I'm sure it's stiffer.

I think I'll just go with some cotton fabric instead, since that's what the pattern is really for.

If I enjoy making it then I can always try some other fabric at a later date.

    Exactly.

Look at it this way. After you've made an X-Kilt out of some cotton-poly twill, and you think you can make another out of the wool, you will be in a much better place to judge the appropriateness of the fabric.
