Greetings,
Well I would recommend Black Hose, that is great for those evening events, White Hose for Day events (usually for pipebands) or Red or Bottle Green or Blue.
Basically choose a hose that goes with one of the colours that are in the Black Stewart tartan, for me I'd choose Black or White depending on the occasion (also with different colour flashes or matching flashes.)
It's down to personal tastes, I could wear Black Hose with Red Flashes etc.
All the best,
Graham.

Black works for me, but I've worn lovat green with a light green argyle jacket. I wore red garter ties with both of them.

As CMcG has pointed out-- for civilian day wear Any Colour But White will work just fine. The same applies to evening wear-- ACBW. If you are going to be wearing your kilt with formal attire (Prince Charlie, etc.) then I'd suggest either argyle hose, or red and black diced hose would be the way to go.
Generally speaking white hose are associated with the low end kilt rental business and pipe bands. For those reasons a kilted gentlemen who does not wish to convey the impression that he is in a pipe band, or has merely hired his outfit for the day, is best advised to avoid wearing white "socks" with his kilt.
