I have to agree with the Rabble. Tweed will be fine, no plaid.
Dress the best you can with what you have and can afford. No shame in that.
And the tartan is your call. After looking at them I can't decide either.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

Firstly, tweed indeed - agreed.
Secondly, red.
Save the fly plaid for when you get your jabot and sheriffmuir.

Red (Modern) or Green (Hunting Modern)

MacLean Hunting and tweed. I much prefer our Hunting to our Modern(red).

Traditional
I am a member of the Clan Maclean England And Wales Society and have a couple of Maclean kilts (ancient and weathered) but would love the Hunting one. When the Clan Chief comes to burns night and wears his Prince Charlie (a beautiful dark green velvet one with a matching waistcoat and clasps instead of buttons looking like scottish salmon nose to nose!) he always wears his red modern kilt. During less formal occasions he seems to wear his hunting tartan with the tweed. If anyone argues point at the chief and say that's how he does it!
Here he is at his recent wedding http://www.maclean.org/

amaclean2000, Thank you Sir! You have erased all doubt in my mind that I will be accepted and not ridiculed by the people attending our Burns Night. If the Chief can do it, by God, that is good enough for me!
Thanks again,
Eric Schutte
