Have you ever thought about a DNA search? http://www.familytreedna.com/ I haven't done it, but it seems rather interesting if you have a blocking point in your research. Has anybody else on XMTS ever done a DNA search?

Never done a DNA search but have my family back to Clan Rollo 820AD. Brute, you might try going to the library since most have geneology folks there or can direct you. Geneology folks are always glad to help but find a group that does it free of charge. Also the Later Day Saints have a very good research library. Need to find death and birth certificates.
