Wearing a Kilt in New Mexico

I travel the four corners area a lot - kilted. Have been to Farmington kilted. My kiltmaker lives in Albuquerque. We've a lot of guys on the board from New Mexico. They have a huge highland games in New Mexico. Don't see the problem. Never had anything but compliments kilted in New Mexico.

My favorite comment of all time came from a drunk guy panhandling in a supermarket parking lot in Albuquerque. He saw me kilted and shouted out, "Hey Switzerland!!)

I would post my response to the idea that tea partiers / conservatives are rednecks and not open to new things, but several of my fellows here have made the point admirably.

Wow! So, there was a reference to tea-party conservative rednecks?!?! This is offensive? Who would have thought that a group of men who wear kilts would have such thin skin. I happen to fall under the conservative, and sometimes redneck (although not necessarily tea-party) category, and I for one am not offended by the label.

I believe that kilts span the full spectrum of ideologies, from conservative rednecks to liberal hippies. I thnk we should focus not on the political orientation, but on how spectacular it is that there is a heritage, and a garment that can bring us all together.

I've never had a problem being kilted in El Paso. People here are much more open to cultural diversity. A Mexican woman came up to me at the Symphony last week and said in Spanish: "That's absolutely beautiful. I've never seen one in person before." Kilt On!

BTW due to a geographic anomaly El Paso is in Texas and not in New Mexico.

I just reread the original post... Is this what has everyone up in arms? Really? Indicating that there are republicans, Tea Party activists and rednecks all in the same place? That's offensive? Forgive me... but I don't see it!

Funny, I live in the backcountry and I find that the people here are pretty tolerant of others. I guess "rednecks" kind of like the whole "to each his own" thing around here.
