question about "modern" kilts
one thing im not sure of is with "modern" kilts like utilikilts and sportkils, and even alphakilts... are they worn around the hips like shorts would be or are they worn high up like a normal kilt? i cant seem to find any information on the subject even with google lol.

Utilikilts, I can tell you, are intended by the maker to be worn at the same place as pants (i.e. your hips, not your waist). But I do wear mine higher up than that, though not as high as I would a traditional kilt.
*edited to add:
See this page: http://www.utilikilts.com/company/kilt-sizing/
They say, "The waistband should sit on your hips where your pants normally ride."

There isn't a single "modern" kilt. There are lots of makers and they make them differently. You need to talk to a maker and find out what they mean.
I make modern kilts but in a very traditional way , with a high rise, usual buckles, sewn fell, wide apron etc, the difference with mine is that I use modern fabrics!

When I bought my first Amerikilt, I didn't have the good sense to ask this question. (Actually, it never even occured to me that there was a question to be asked!) I bought it and tried to wear it like a normal kilt, and it looked like a mini skirt on me! So Amerikilts are meant to be worn at the hips- which I HATE. So I order my AKs long now- 23 inch drop- so that I can wear them correctly! (Or at least, my perception of correctly!)

When I order a new kilt I think about where I'll be wearing it (on the hips for a UK and at my navel for a USAK) and take my measurements accordingly. I tried to order one to wear at the "traditional" waist, but found it so uncomfortable that I returned to kilt to have it altered. If I were you, I'd figure out where you'll like wearing them best and then talk to the kiltmaker about how that will effect your measurements.
