Bonnets on or off?

Glasgow32, are you asking about the Scottish custom regarding the wearing of bonnets indoors, or about the American tradition re: wearing hats inside when one is wearing Highland dress? I can't give you an answer for the second, but with reference to the first, a definite, firm, unequivocal NO. In Scotland we always listen to our grandmothers because they know!

This American of Scottish descent always listened to his grandmother as well, Rex. She would have said NO also to such a question.

When I have played my pipes inside a church, I go uncovered because a pseudo-military uniform, such as one of my kits is, is not true military.

Unless the gentleman involved is a traditional Jew. As such, I remain hatted, indoors or out, Highland or Saxon attire. If I know I
m going to be in a church, I try to remember to have a skullcap along to replace my balmoral. But to go bareheaded, would be for me very discourteous to the church, as it would imply that in the church I was not in the Lord's presence. As a gentleman, I would never do that.

I am in the south too, and I would never wear any head-dress in a church. The one exception to the "no hat rule" is for military (and pipe bands) as they do not take off their bonnets during prayer, even outside. So, I vote no. Don't wear it inside the church.

I don't know about the US miliatary but here we most certainly take our bonnets off in church.

That is me too (particularly in my own abode, GRRRR) and if I was visiting a place beyond my ken then a keen eye,a few modest questions, a willingness to observe other's customs and a sympathetic mind should see you safely through.

Historically speaking, Bonnets were worn indoors until the Victorian era. Today it would be considered rude.

There is one rule that I personally go by; if I'm in doubt about the appropriateness of wearing a hat, I remove mine. I believe that there would be very few times that one would be in error following that guideline.
