You give very good advice, sir.

Last winter, I taught my girlfriend how to knit, and after 10-15 minutes, she could do it well enough to make a pair of garters. She's churning out the most wonderful and creative hats left and right, from her own patterns, after only ten months of practice. Knitting is really one of the best hobbies I can think of- inexpensive, creative, you can turn out a first-rate product, you can do it anywhere, and you can socialize, watch TV, or listen to music while doing it.

I hate to keep raining on your parade, but I'd encourage you to find an old lady to teach you. They're usually glad to pass on their knowledge and skills, and they like to hug, too.

Tea! Don't forget tea and time to listen to some stories!
(when I was learning to knit up in NH the woman that sold us yarn also gave us advice and it was a lovely way to spend an afternoon)
