We all like to think that "if we look in the right places, we will find the right answers". The cruel truth is that quite often the answer is not to be found. Until really quite recently it was easy for a person to change their name and hundreds of thousands did so. By accident or design or laziness, names got changed.
By all means, people should try and trace their heritage, but be aware that not every enquiry will lead to a noble ancestor - most will lead nowhere. Some, unfortunately might lead to thieves or traitors or murderers.
As I used to tell my son, "If you don't want to hear the answer - don't ask the question".

I am not much interested in nobility, I just would like to know about my history. As it stands I only know about 3 generations back, barely, and only on my mother's side.
