Shades of green, blue red, and grey all would work well...reds especially. Try a claret colour.
Quesition of clarification: Is the objection to diced hose in general for dayware, or to the particular black/red color combination? Too "loud" perhaps? Similarly, are you suggesting solid hose in those other colors, or in combination as diced hose?

I have a pair of tartan hose that I wear with my clan tartan for formal functions, but now I'm pretty much a diced hose man, as the diced hose tend to "pop" out from an outfit more than the tartan ones do. A buddy of mine wore red and white diced hose with his Macaulay Hunting kilt at our Burns Supper this year, and got nothing but compliments about it.

If I were to go the red/white route it would definitely be for evening wear, but to my eye it seems a bit over-the-top for a simple Prince Charlie; I think the red/white combo looks better with a doublet of some sort.

I even think the red/black "pops" a little too much for my taste, hence my preference for tartan hose for black-tie.
