    Box Pleat?

    Greetings All,

I was speaking to a kilt maker last night at the Order of St. Lazarus Christmas Dinner in Calgary, Alberta.

I was thinking of getting my next kilt made in the box pleat. He warned me that it requires more care for the pleats?

I live in a rural town, two hours from anywhere so the kilt would see a lot of car seat time.

    Anyone have experience with this?

    Peace

    Robert

    Hello,
My box pleated kilt does require a bit more work to keep the pleats looking proper, more so than my knife pleated ones.

Although I do not have a box pleated kilt in wool. This may be why....

I haven't noticed that boxes need more care than knives, and I own both.
What tartan are you wanting? You know we'll need lots of pictures!

Merry Christmas to you and your parish. Remember us at the Eucharist tomorrow.

My box pleat is actually a double box, and it's made from 16oz wool tartan. I have had no problems at all maintaining the pleats. As a matter of fact, I find that they require less care than my knife pleats. When I get into the car, I find that it's actually much easier to sweep the pleats.

I have a Matt Newsome box pleated kilt and I have not found it any different, by way of creasing, to a 8 yard knife pleated kilt. Both are 16oz wool
Only last weekend I wore it whilst driving home from a Highland games. The drive was 2.5 hrs. I hung it up after getting home and in the morning it looked fine

My brother has a MILITARY box pleat kilt and he says the pleats in that are tough to manage. Perhaps that is what he is thinking of.

Thank you all for your feed back.

I am looking at 16 oz wool, Hearts of Midlothian tartan made into a kilt. The box pleat in my opinion looks rather "sharp" and it is on my list. I have 16 oz knife and PV and have never had a problem with the pleats so when I heard this comment...I just wanted to see what you folks thought?

    Thanks for the assistance.

Go with the heaviest weight you can find. You won't have a problem with the pleats, and any wrinkles will fall out overnight. I have one lighter weight box (13oz), and it requires more pressing, and careful sitting in the car, to look neat. The other "boxes" I own are 16oz+, and they are easy to car for, and travel very well. In fact, my Matt Newsome is my favorite road trip kilt.
