Hullo I have a few questions about kilts.

Greetings! We have friends in Braxton County so we have spent a lot of time in your beautiful state.

My suggestion to you (and you will get many more from this site) are to come up with budget first, then determine if you want a tartan or solid color kilt, then start with the advertisers on this site. They will all be more than willing to help you out, and will direct you to a more appropriate vendor if they can't.

Take your time and get just the right kilt (and measure!.) It is a great investment and you will become a legend in Huntington!

Here is my 5 cents worth. I you are looking to buy a formal kilt and don't want to spent alot of money give j. higgins a try. They have treated me very well. I have purchased 2 kilts for them. one for my skinny son about 3 years ago and one for myself about a year ago and they are very nice. I would put them up against a 800 dollar one any day. But remember the measurements you send to them will be the measurements you get!! I measured mine a little big and I had to make a few mods of my own and it now works great. (Moved the straps back a bit per suggestions found here). Scotweb also has some videos on how to measure and how to wear a kilt. I don't know anything about rentals for where you are.

Native West Virginian here, now living just outside Louisville, KY. But I drive thru Huntington on a regular basis en route to visit my parents in SE WV, and still have kin scattered all along I-64 from Huntington to Charleston, then all over the VA-WV borders.

Welcome to Xmarks. As stated before there are innumerable vendors on this forum that advertize at various levels, and one or more will surely have what you require, once you are sure what you want. My only siggestion is to do your homework and leave plenty of lead time when ordering before your need-by date, as so much of what we wear is custom made to order. As an example an average casual kilt made to order (unless you happen to be a standard size) will take at least 6 -12 weeks from stock material and even longer, maybe double that, if the fabric has to be woven special order.

And don't hesitate to search previous threads for answers to your questions, or just ask them here----someone will either know the answer or give you some ideas on how to find it yourself.

Fastest way, is to use Jerry at Stillwater, or Sport kilt off the rack, you'll be wearing a kilt yesterday.

For one who wants to wait a wee bit longer any one of the vendors here can help, the are all mostly fine people, and the ones who are not fine are at least fair. :o)

I have been looking down these posts and just wanted to make note that J. Higgins makes their 8 yard kilts from wool imported from Scotland. (Not sure if you wanted a plaid or something else) I have currently just bought 13 oz Robertson Hunting and they are great. Your first post notes that you are looking for a formal kilt which made me think of these guys first. I don't know if the other companies offer wool, but I have bought poly kilts from sport kilt and from stillwater. The poly kilts are just fine for casual wear but just do not look as sharp as the wool (my opinion). The sport kilt has better velcro than the still water and a few other features which are nice. If you can sew or have someone who can the Stillwater kilts are just fine. I buy them for my sons and then sew down the pleats some on the back this makes them look better. The poly kilts also tend to 'pill' with use and this makes them look worn before their time. This can be rectified with a disposable razor (to carefully shave off the pills), some starch and an iron. This will make them look new again! I have not purchased an 8 yard from any other company than j. higgins probably never will.

One more note: I learned a little trick for those of us who are a little round when I have bought kilt belts they have had two loops on them. If you put your sporran chains through the loops on the belt and slide them forward you can adjust your sporran to hang under the buckle and not under the belly. It looks nicer. (tip I got from a Scottish vendor in Payson, UT. Bless him )

Go mountaineers? =P I attend Marshall. So it would be Go Thundering Herd for me. But I would like to attend the Highland games. It is something I've always wanted to see.

Sorry about that! (I'm a WVU fan... there's not many of us here in California...)

My mother lives in Hurricane, not far from you. I stay with her when I visit, and drive up to the Games in Bridgeport. They're held on the first Saturday in May.

If you can get to Hurricane I'd be happy to drive the rest of the way to Bridgeport. It's a fair drive.
