I'm sorry
I'm sorry for starting this post, with the news that the games have been cancelled. I was in contact with the clans committeeman last week and he didn't mention this. No Houston Highland Games in 2011, what is the world coming to?

He probablyh didn't know, BD. The decision wasn't made until January 12; although, I had heard rumors.

Wow, that sucks. I was hoping to go there this year.
But you all are welcome to come to the San Antonio Highland Games on April 2-3!

A kilt night in lieu of the games sounds good... See you all in San Antonio.

Unhappy Camper
It comes as a disappointment to me that the Houston Highland Games have been canceled. I had put in for vacation and got it approved. I was unable to attend the 2010 games due to illness and was looking forward to trying out my new Sony Alpha camera this year. I tried to get an answer from the Houston Highland Games Facebook page but was ignored. Well I guess I'll just save my money up for next years games.

I put in for a vacation day too. I am trying to get Clan Keith a spot at the San Antonion games now, but can't get anyone from there to respond. Houston has always been my favorite game because 1) it was the first one I even went too, and 2) I used to live there, so it was the only one I didn't have to shell out bucks for a hotel to attend the whole weekend. Maybe more of us can make it San Antonio, (if they ever respond I will be there.)

That sounds like a plan, mark your calenders for May 21st, location TBA.

I'll say this as someone is is not directly involved with the games other than as a set-up volunteer and patron, but I do hear a lot of things; The Houston games haven't really been 'growing' much year to year to start with, and a year with no games won't help at all, unless that year is used to really take a hard look at the event, and how it's run.
I know there are people on the HHGA board who work their guts out every year, but the prevailing opinion seems to be that they tend to do basically the same things each year. I know that this last year there were lot's of suggestions made to try and improve a lot of stuff, and attract more patrons, but it seems those suggestions were often met with a loud chorus of either: 'We've never done it that way before', or 'We tried it that way years ago and it didn't work'.
I go to a local Sci-Fi con that's run this way, It's run by a small cadre of hard working like minded folks. They do a great job, but they started it a certain way, they like it, and are very resistant to most ideas to change or expand the show.

Zardoz made an excellent reply to my post. Guess I'll take the wife to Corpus Christi and see the old ship I served on from 1968 to 1972, the USS Lexington in May instead.
