Lovely! I love anything done in the Wilsons of Bannockburn colours.

I'd glad those wonderful old shades are making a comeback.

About the shift of red to orange in "ancient colours", red indeed would shift to pink if it were made lighter in tint but stayed at the same intensity/saturation and hue. I can certainly see why the weavers would want to avoid that.

But red could stay the same hue (that is, the same position on the colour wheel) and the same tint (that is, relative presence of white) but be decreased in intensity/saturation, in other words become less vivid or strong (increase the presence of grey). It's like the red we see in "reproduction" or "weathered" colours. I wonder what "ancient" tartans would look like with the red remaining red.

I prefer to describe ancient red as flame rather than orange, and I love it.

I can't offer much in the way of the choice of tartan, but as for Rocky...don't worry. I must have called him and emailed him countless times. No joke. From my experience, he would rather work with you to get you the kilt you want than anything else. There has been some good advice here, and remember to ask ALL the questions you have up front. You'll be much happier with a great kilt than to wonder "if only I asked that one all important question. "

    Best of luck!

Thanks, I intend to go see Rocky in about a month. He suggested muted colors vs modern. This sounds good to me. I want to look at diffrent tartans in his shop to get a good understanding before I pull the trigger and place the order.

Were I get another Crawford kilt I think I would choose Weathered or Muted, as with the Ancient colours the effect seems to verge on... what's that technical term?
    Ah yes, 'eye-bu99ering'.

Of course the second would make a good 'hunting' tartan to go with a DayGlo vest...
