It has that in common with Welsh, and also with French (I believe there is a Gaulish influence there).
I read somewhere that Welsh usage of the definite article is in many cases opposite to the English. One would speak (in Welsh) of going to “the London” rather than “London”, but on the way one might cross “Severn”, rather than “the Severn”.
One thing French definitely has in common with Gaelic is its definition of its word for island. The Ile de France is an area defined by the rivers that surround it. The Scottish Gaelic innis can also be an area defined by rivers, rather than by the sea or a lake (as the English would prefer to use the word island.

certainly in Scotland when we precede any word with the definite article, it always denotes something important, dramatic or noticeable.
As with certain place names round about central Scotland we always say -
The Garngad, The Renton, The Plains, The Raploch etc., plenty of place names like this. I'm sure some of our Scots members will come up with a few more
One common strand about the places I have mentioned, they are all quite dramatic locations!
