Thanks for all the help!
For a quick and easy leather strap, I went into the Ladies' section of the local department store and bought a plain black leather belt in the thinner width that women like, and which fit my sporran.

Appreciate the advice on ties; what sort of ending should there be on them if we do our own?

Here's a link to Arlen's thread linky
Here are some that were for sale a while back, showing a more elaborate scheme linky
In this thread the fellow is using a loom to create a more rounded tie -- similar to those sold by Big Mikey, although IIRC Mikey's are larger in scale (no surprise LOL).
Here is one of the woven variants I mentioned (link) -- this fellow has cut on the bias to create some stretch. Takes a lot of fabric so probably not something you would want to do with real tartan!
All just variations on the theme. Search for "garter" and you'll get all these links and many, many more!

Thanks in advance!
Sorry Bill, I'm not much of a craft person but it seems that Sydnie has given you some pretty good leads for DYI projects. If you are interested in purchasing some already made, here is a link to a great merchant I have used for socks, garter ties, and sweaters. Highly recommended!

Courtesy of Matt Newsome, here is a link to the method of tying that I use. Works great for me!

I had purchased garter ties from Matt at the Tartan Museum and stopped using flashes.
After Arlen's post and asking my wife to try making me ties following Arlen's directions. She has now made me 5 pair. After the first couple of pair she made when I was away for a week, we went shopping for more yarn. We found a variegated yarn with gold, rust, black and purple. It made a gorgeous garter tie with the multicolored fringe. It looks great with the black and brown Rob Roy sporran I bought from Joe Gondek last month.
Garter ties are the way to go. Thanks Arlen for the directions.

I'm in the process of sourcing them out. Sadly, neither S.W.M.B.O. nor I knit, but I think I'll have a basic pair on the way shortly. There's no shortage of suppliers on the web!

I think that spot is just fine, if that's where you like it. You colud go a little lower if you wanted, but that'd just be up to what you prefer. It's much better worn quite high than too low.

Best,

Me too.
Also, I agree that garter ties, wether bought or hand knit, are vastly superior to elastic garters.
