I have a couple of PV kilts from Canadian Casual Kilt - they use Marton Mills material. They are generously hemmed and can be adjusted to length if desired. Mine ride like a traditional kilt. The hem adds some weight and may be of advantage in scottish country dancing. USA Kilts have also received good reviews and you wouldn't go wrong in using them.

    Wool vs Synthetics

I have wool socks, wool shirts and wool trousers. It will come as no suprise I have a wool kilt and when I get another it will be wool too. I have also discovered that there is no man made substitute for goose down in coats and sleeping bags. When it comes to wine, women, kilts and sleeping bags nothing else is "just as good." I also happen to believe that had God wanted fiber glass boats he would have made fiber glass trees. I should add that my 3 year old, 7 year old and 11 year old grandsons have synthetic kilts (poly acrylic whatever that means) so their kilts are machine washable. Pilling is a problem by the way.

    Regards,

A USAK Semi-Trad will do you very well. I have one in the American Heritage tartan that is now over four years old. Still looks as good as the day I received it. It is in the regular rotation of kilts, as I wear a kilt every day. I wear them everywhere but at work. @# govournment regulations require trousers. Trousers equal much pain.
Rocky has made several kilts for me, and they are all going strong.

A Freedom Kilt in P/V is also a great deal. I will be getting one ordered this year. Steve and Rocky are both great to work with.

I have experienced this with acrylic, but thankfully not with PV. Thus far zero pilling issues.

I absolutely love PV, for several reasons. It's machine washable, holds a pleat pretty well, the colors are as good as wool, it's fairly cool in hot weather but warm enough for winter(IMHO...but I'm pretty hot-blooded), it doesn't wrinkle much and when it does it's easy to get them out, pilling happens but it's pretty resistant to it. USAK PV (and some others I think) have a Teflon coating to resist stains. None of mine have any stains, and they've had spills.

It's also non-allergenic, which is a plus for those of us with sensitivities to wool. I can wear some wool, others give me trouble. I actually bought two suits at the same time, same maker, but in different colors. One doesn't bother me, but I had to give the other to my Dad. It's a crapshoot for me, so I just avoid it.

The only downside is that for some reason it isn't made in heavier weights, but it's heavy enough to do the job. I would like a PV "tank," but it just isn't happening. You would think the mills would offer a heavier PV, but I'm sure there is a legitimate reason. Maybe someday?

All told, I think PV is the best alternative to wool.

Correct on both counts. Don't allow any confusion between acrylic fabric and PV; nor between real PV (from Marton Mills) and any other PV, PV-acetate blend, etc. PV is the bomb if (1) it's Marton Mills fabric; (2) the kilt is well made. You will find both from the sponsors mentioned here.

My first "good" kilt was a USAK semi-trad; it is still my favorite. It's approaching 4 years old, has been machine-washed many times, and I can detect a tiny amount of pilling, but you won't see it from 2.5 feet away.
