Of course, Webb's POV is an Appalachian one; while the roots of Ozarks culture are Appalachian, there are some major differences in the two. The Ozarks is not Appalachia West.

For an Ozarks perspective, I would highly recommend Brooks Blevins' Hillfolks: a history of Arkansas Ozarkers & their image from the University of North Carolina Press:

It does focus more on Arkansas than Missouri, but it will give a good overview of the Ozark cultural region.
