Oxford needs to look up the word "slang."

As an Oxford consumer and someone whose idea of rollicking good time used to be to sit down and read word histories in the 28 volume edition (I was injured at the time, OK?), I can say that previously they were very conservative, to the point where their dictionaries were not at all useful past the year 1900 or so (they only did two editions in a century for heaven's sake) and not always then if a word hadn't met their criteria for inclusion. Now they appear to have gone to the other extreme. Not sure how I feel about that, but for sure English is out of control of the English and they can do nothing to stem the tide of new words. Or the tsunami, if you like. Which for them would be a new word!

I do hope you all realize that this sort of thing has been going on since languages began, we just notice it more now because of the speed of communications. That's why the same item could be called three different things based on whether the speaker is from England, Australia, or the US. Now, I find it irritating myself, especially when someone uses "text speak" in normal language, but this is really just one more way the english language is evolving.

I don’t fully agree. I think the speed at which we communicate adds a new variable. Rather than our language evolving and gaining new words for new concepts, ideas, inventions, we are simply allowing for misspellings and laziness! Haha. We live in an age full of educators and spell-checkers; there is no real need to accept misspellings to mean the same exact thing as the word in which they are attempted to be. I agree with you guys language is ever evolving and adapting, but seriously, “buttload” ??? I mean, c’mon! lol
